High Security Garage Doors – Keeping your property safe and secure

The majority of garages are literally a treasure trove of high value items such as bikes, lawnmowers, power tools and camping equipment. In order to adequately secure your garage and your belongings against intruders it is essential that you have installed a highly secure garage door.

So what is the best garage door for me?

Traditionally garage doors have been secured by a single lock that requires manually locking to secure the garage. These types of locks are very easy to defeat in a matter of seconds, leaving the garage vulnerable. Modern garage doors by comparison are much more advanced and secure. Many garage doors now incorporate multi point locking mechanisms making it much harder to bypass.

However, the most popular and most secure garage doors available in the UK tend to be roller garage doors and some even come with insurance rated levels of approval. This means you can reduce your insurance premiums at the same time as securing your property.

Roller garage doors are extremely resistant to attack thanks to the doors design and the materials used in manufacturing.

This type of door opens and closes vertically. The door curtain overlaps into the door guide channels meaning once the door is shut it is virtually impossible to pry the door out of the guides. This means the only way to force the door is from the bottom. To counter this, roller shutter garage doors incorporate a reinforced bottom rail that has been specifically designed to protect against attack.

In instances where you require electric roller garage doors, the motor even acts as a lock for the door. Another great feature is that should someone try to force the door from the bottom, the motor will actively engage to hold the door shut. The best roller doors will even incorporate into the design an inbuilt alarm that will trigger should someone tamper with the door.

One final plus point is that the doors do not feature a handle. This is a great detail as it leaves no point of leverage half way up the door making it that much more time consuming and difficult to break through.

Roller doors can be broadly classed into two categories.

The single skin roller garage door

This type of door is literally a single skin of steel that has been passed through roll formers in the manufacturing process to give the material a curved or corrugated profile. They are ideally suited to both domestic and commercial applications. Prices generally start from around £400 for a good quality door.

The insulated roller garage door

Insulated roller shutter doors are highly secure. They feature 2 skins of aluminium or steel and have foam filled insulation in between to increase the rigidity of the door profile. This type of door will provide high levels of security and is generally only available in an electrically operated version.
Many features are incorporated into the desing such as safety edges, manual overrides, alarms, courtesy lights etc. Expect to pay at least £800 for a good quality door from one of the leading manufacturers such as Gliderol or SWS

Garages provide fantastic security for your car. Parking in a garage decreases the amount of insurance you have to pay for a reason! To make sure that the garage also provides great security for your home installing a solid garage door, and maintaining it helps to keep any unwanted trespassers. Another important thing to remember is to always lock the door that separates the garage from the home. It is essentially a “front door” and should be treated as such.

Thanks for an interesting post. I agree with Julia. It is so important to keep your garage door secure and the door that separates it from the home. I’m always guilty of leaving the ‘in-between’ door unlocked!
