Design Tips for Your Mailbox: Ways to Decorate It for $20 or less

Most people never really consider the aesthetics of the mailbox. Who cares what it looks like as long as it holds the mail, right? But there are some things that may lead one to consider a change in décor.

Let’s look at a specific scenario. You’ve just bought a new home and the previous owner was a HUGE Tennessee Vols fan. According to you, the new owner, there are many things wrong with this but the most pressing issue to deal with is the very large and very orange super-fan mailbox in front of the house. The last thing you want is for someone to mistake you for a Vols fan so you’ve got to change it. Only, you don’t want to spend that much cash or buy an entirely new box so what can you do to rid the front of your home of the taint that is Vols orange? Here are three ideas.

  1. Painting – In all honesty, this is going to be the easiest thing to do. Sick and tired of how your mailbox looks? Paint it a different color. You can really have some fun with this using things like stencils and patterns and for every holiday it could be themed! The sky is the limit with paint, just be sure not to irritate the home owner’s association.
  2. Landscaping – Another thing you could do is add some landscaping around the post at the base of the mailbox. Add some colored mulch, or some flowers/bushes. You’ll be surprised at how big a difference just a few colorful flowers can make to a mailbox base.
  3. Crafts – This one is the most labor intensive but it’s also the most fun. If you’re a crafty person you can really make your mailbox truly original. Using cost-effective materials you can paint, bedazzle, and/or papier mache your mailbox into the dream it was always meant to be. The same homeowner’s association warning applies.

If you have a mailbox you’re not crazy about or one that’s decorated for a long passed holiday, there are definitely easy and cost-effective ways to change it. No matter what you decide to do the important thing to remember is that you never have to be confined to a Vols orange super-fan mailbox. And that’s what really matters, isn’t it?

This would be a really good option for my customers after a mailbox was vandalized.
