Backyard Decorating Ideas and Inspirations

Just because it is outdoors doesn’t mean that the backyard isn’t a part of your home. Rather the backyard is a space that allows your house to extend into the beauty of nature, allowing it to partake of the vibrant features of light and life that are the hallmark of these outdoor areas. When decorating, it is up to you to try and blend your accents and pieces into this living world, accentuating the positive elements without seeking to overwhelm them with your décor choices.

Many people choose to build a patio in their backyards. This is often done to create a separate shaded area that acts like a transition between the interior and exterior of the home. Hardwood, stone, or brick flooring gives the illusion of being indoors, while the open walls and sometimes ceiling gives you the beauty of sky and light and nature.

The backyard itself can often be broken into different areas. Many people find it useful to create a play area, for children, consisting of a swing set, play set, or sand box. This has the advantage of giving the kids a separate place to play, which inversely allowing the adults to congregate without the kids getting in the way.

Seating areas are also popular in backyard decorating. This can consist of a table and chairs, shaded by a big umbrella, or it can be as simple as a wooden bench, or swinging chair, set beneath a shady tree. The idea is to give people a place to congregate, so that they can talk and enjoy each others company without having to stand around the entire time.

These areas can often be accented with illuminated features that will allow them to be used even after the sun sets. Solar powered lamps and lighting decals can provide a small amount of illumination, but a fire pit, or tiki torches set throughout the space can give off even more. You can also purchase outdoor ready string lights that can illuminate the area with colorful hues.

Since the backyard has an abundance of sun, rain, and soil, plants are often used as decorative pieces, because it is relatively easy to maintain them. You can purchase larger leafy plants and trees to act as natural shades against the sun, or you can choose smaller flowering plants as accents throughout the area. You also have the option of planting vegetables or herbs that will not only be attractive, but which can also provide you with tasty treats come harvest time.

Pathways through the backyard are also another popular decorative feature. They give you lanes that you can decorate on either side with flowers or plants. The paths themselves can be made of brick paving stones, concrete, broken tiles, or quarry stones.

While decorative touches are nice, the most important thing to do to keep your backyard looking beautiful is to simply keep it tidy. Don’t let clutter collect, clean up refuse and garbage, rake your leaves, and pull the weeds, to keep the space looking attractive, orderly, and fresh. Through it all any decorative endeavors you take should be simple enough that they are easy for you to maintain.

When I and my husband have bought a big house with a garden I was a bit worrying because it’s such a big piece of work to keep the backyard in order and to make it look tidy and with some style. We have pets and they are a bit messy with flowers. Finally after several months of experimenting I realized the best way to decorate your backyard is to keep it clean and natural. I live in PA so the weather always makes some surprises.

I personally love having plants in my backyard. At one point, I even made a little farm with a bunch of fruit and vegetable plants growing! I’ve never been able to get it all looking stellar though, as it’s a big yard and I never had too much time to work on it. I love your idea about the brick flooring, and I’m going to look into it! Thanks!

Anything within your lot is part of the house design. One shouldn’t just focus on the interior design of the house, but also include the front lawn, the backyard and other areas. Your website does offer wonderful ideas and I appreciate them all.
