The modern style is among the most popular designs for bedrooms today. The approach adopts the rallying cry of all modern design styles: in the words of the renowned modernist architect Louis Sullivan, “form follows function.” While there are a number of different approaches one can take to modernize a bedroom, it is important to keep in mind that every fine detail counts! It is necessary to think outside the box and be creative, so you are designing something unique to your sense of style.
With that in mind, here are 10 tips to follow if you’re trying to create a modern bedroom!
1. Utilize Clean Lines
Whether it is furniture, accents or fabrics, the modernist style emphasizes clean lines and geometric shapes. The shapes often play off of one another, giving off a structured but eloquent essence.
2. Emphasize Natural Light
Most modern bedrooms include an emphasis on emitting natural light, via large windows, doors and/or skylights. Dark is out, light is in! For example, check out this beautiful modern bedroom for a perfect example:
3. Employ Neutral Backgrounds
The walls and other background surfaces of a modern bedroom virtually always reflect neutral colors such as white, off-white, beige, gray or tan.
4. Introduce Bright Colors via Accents
Since dominant background colors are neutral, bold color is usually introduced into the room in the form of accents, such as curtains or other window treatments, wall-hangings and occasionally bedspreads or comforters and pillows.
5. Use of Targeted Abstract Designs
As a contrast to the neutral tones that dominate the room, abstract designs in fabrics, wall-hangings and accessories are frequently employed in the modern bedroom.
6. Avoid Clutter
Open space and a minimal amount or complete absence of ornate design on furniture and window treatments is a hallmark of the modern look.
7. Avoid Wallpaper
Most wallpaper has a distinct theme or patterned look to them and is inconsistent with most, if not all, of the principles of modernism.
8. Avoid Carpet
The classic modern look involves a wooden or concrete floor—note the neutral tones—with a rug or set of rugs, often with bright colors. If carpet is used for any reason, neutral tones are a must.
9. Don’t Use Framing
Wall hangings are typically unframed media or fabric. If framing is used, thin, unadorned preferably metal frames are the best option.
10. Make the Room Inviting
Following the above guidelines should naturally lead to making a room appear comfortable. The neutral tones have broad appeal, the open spaces and clean lines provide ready places for the eye to rest and the natural light and bright accent colors all help to provide an inviting space.
Work within the guidelines of these tips and you’ll have a bedroom that fits well within the modernist tradition. Always remember, while modern home design maintains a particular style, you can always through your own twist in to how you design your bedroom. You don’t always have to fall in line with what everyone else is doing!
I love your ideas on creating modern bedroom. Naturally, it’s also possible to look toward reproducing the room strategy exactly as any of the concepts you have witnessed.
I also like to have a relaxing room with lot of light and some color too. But colors should be really soothing to the eye. Thanks for the guidelines.
Sunlight is so important! I think letting in as much natural light as possible is one of the best tips.
